I'm sure a lot of regional specialists would take issue with some of his broader generalisations, but again, that's the point - after reading his broad survey, you can then start to drill down and read more about individual regions and countries that interest you.ĮDIT: Sorry, there's another book I thought of which isn't recommended elsewhere on this thread: Although it's written from a particular perspective (geopolitics/classical realism), it's also concise, readable, and gives a high-level introduction to the major actors, regions, and issues in world politics. Once someone has read that and understood some of the basic concepts and debates, it would be easier to venture into the seminal texts.

I would instead echo two other books that have already been mentioned. The same is true for some other authors that are mentioned here, such as Alexander Wendt.
